As an urban Vancouverite, I’m pretty sure I spend most of the year wearing rain boots. And even though I do my best to make sure that they’re cute at the end of the day they’re still just black rubber wellingtons. Which is why I so eagerly await the annual change of weather that brings sunshine and clear blue skies.
Every spring, I look forward to the days of comfy, colourful, and stylish footwear. And this year I’m particularly excited because I plan on spending a good chunk of my summer wearing sustainably produced, and craftsman created espadrilles from Alice & Whittles.
Alice & Whittles is co-founded by a good law school friend of mine, Sofi Khwaja. Currently Alice & Whittles is raising funds for their start-up through a Kickstarter campaign. Sofi and her partner have until April 2nd, 2013 to raise £20,000 – at the time of writing 140 backers have contributed £11,843.
The idea for Alice & Whittles came about when Sofi and her partner were working in North Africa providing humanitarian aid to refugees fleeing conflict zones. Quickly the two co-founders were able to see first hand what some of the most vulnerable people in the world were able to create with few resources and a bit of creativity. Alice & Whittles espadrilles are an attempt to harness that creativity in an alternative to aid that benefits every individual involved in the production process.
In sourcing the fabric for their beautiful espadrilles, Alice & Whittles support small scale organic farmers, and rural hand weavers in India. The next step in the production involves using the passion and skill of artisan craftspeople in France.
The end product is more than just a shoe, it’s a manifestation of a vision.
I am a firm believer that by choosing where we spend our money, we are making a choice about the kind of world in which we want to live. And that’s why I love the concept behind Alice & Whittles.
